A Tradition Preserved Through Ancient Rice and Pure Spring Water

Our students and team at Local Life Japan ventured up north into the serene Japanese countryside for a unique hands-on experience: traditional mochi-making. 🍃🏞️

The Secret Ingredients : Ancient Rice (古代米) and Pure Spring Water (湧水)

The mochi we made wasn’t just any mochi. We used 古代米 (ancient rice), known for its rich history, deep flavour, and nutritional benefits. Combined with 湧水 (pure spring water) from natural mountain springs, every bite of mochi was packed with tradition and authenticity. 💧🍚

An Authentic Journey to Rural Japan

Nestled in a picturesque rural village, surrounded by rolling hills and clear skies, our day began with warm welcomes from local farmers. 🌾

The Mochi-Making Process: From Rice to Delicious Treats

With guidance from our farmer hosts, students learned the art of steaming, pounding, and shaping the mochi by hand—a rhythmic and joyful process passed down through generations. 🥢🍡

Preparing Homemade Miso Soup with Local Ingredients

After our mochi-making session, we prepared a warm bowl of traditional miso soup using homemade miso and locally grown vegetables. 🥒🍲

The vegetables, freshly harvested from the nearby fields, were simmered in a light broth made from pure spring water (湧水). The homemade miso, crafted with care using traditional methods, added a deep and savoury umami flavour to the soup.

This simple yet rich dish perfectly complemented our freshly made mochi, creating a meal filled with authentic rural Japanese flavours and heartfelt hospitality. 🥰
