meet our team

Meet Yuriko

Growing up between Japan, China and the UK, Yuriko experienced firsthand what it means to build a life in a new culture.

She created Local Life Japan with one simple belief:

Language is learned through people, not just textbooks.

That's why our programme combines Japanese lessons with homestay, local interaction and hands-on cultural experiences, creating a place where students feel welcome, build genuine connections, and experience everyday life in Japan.

Because the best memories aren't made by seeing Japan, they're made by feeling at home here.

With a Master's in Education from UCL and a Cambridge CELTA qualification, Yuriko combines international educational expertise with her own experience of building a life across cultures.

Meet Hiroko

Born and raised in the Kobe–Akashi area, Hiroko helps students experience Japan the way locals do, through everyday life, genuine connections, and a warm sense of belonging.

With over 15 years of homestay hosting experience and teaching Japanese since 2016, she has welcomed students from around the world into the local community, helping them feel at home from the moment they arrive.

"Language isn't just something you study. It's something you share through everyday life."

Hiroko carefully matches students with local Japanese families and creates hands-on cultural experiences that go beyond sightseeing, making it easier to build confidence, friendships, and lasting memories in Japan.

Meet Nathan

Originally from the US, Nathan travelled the world before choosing to make Japan his home.

Like many of our students, he arrived knowing what it feels like to adapt to a new culture, build a new life, and find a place to belong. After falling in love with the slower pace and welcoming community here, he decided to stay.

Today, Nathan supports students throughout their journey, from answering questions before arrival to helping them settle into everyday life in Japan. Having gone through the same experience himself, he understands both the excitement and the challenges of moving abroad.

"Starting a new life in another country can feel overwhelming. Sometimes all you need is someone who's been there before."

Whether it's your first day in Japan or your first conversation in Japanese, Nathan is there to help you feel confident, supported, and at home.

Meet Mat

Originally from Brazil, Mat first came to Local Life Japan as a student.

Like many of our students, he arrived looking for more than just language lessons, he wanted to experience everyday life in Japan and become part of the local community.

After falling in love with life in Akashi, he decided to stay and join the Local Life Japan team.

"I know what it's like to arrive in Japan not knowing anyone. That's why I love helping new students feel welcome from day one."

Having experienced the programme himself, Mat understands the excitement, challenges, and little moments that make living in Japan so special. Today, he helps new students settle in, build confidence, and feel at home, just as others once did for him.

Meet Yoichi

After a successful career as an engineer, Yoichi decided it was time for a new adventure.

Rather than slowing down, he chose to begin a second career teaching Japanese - combining his lifelong curiosity with a passion for meeting people from around the world.

An enthusiastic motorcyclist, Yoichi loves exploring Japan's quieter roads, hidden cafés, and scenic coastal routes. He believes some of the best conversations happen not in a classroom, but while sharing everyday moments and discovering new places together.

"Learning a language isn't about being perfect. It's about having the confidence to connect with people."

Yoichi encourages students to enjoy the journey, embrace new experiences, and discover that it's never too late to start something new. Whether that's learning Japanese or beginning a new chapter in life.
